Morris sells fish from a stall in the marketplace. Across the way, Minnie sells hats. Their eyes meet and soon they are in love. Morris wants to give his bride a beautiful home, but he is only a poor fishmonger. One day, he comes up with a brilliant plan: he will make their wedding so fine that their friends will have to shower them with the best of everything. His Minnie will live like a movie star!
Morris’ plan backfires, of course, but like all good love stories, this is a tale that ends in a happy — if surprising — fashion.

“This was my second book for children and, like my first, also an adaptation. The original story, Abraham Cahan’s A Ghetto Wedding, was published in 1898. I set my version in Toronto’s Kensington Market in the 1920s because my mother lived there when she was a little girl. It was a neighbourhood where many immigrant people first lived on arriving in Toronto. The illustrator, Regolo Ricci, walked around the neighbourhood and looked at old photographs to find inspiration for his paintings.”
